An integrated assessesment and management of flood risk: case studies at the national, regional and local scale

The Project responds to the society's call for mitigation of negative effects of floods on population and landscape. The paradigm of flood risk management is changing. From the exclusive application of the engineering approach, which is based on the flood protection by means of technical structures is gradually going to the integrated flood risk management. An integrated approach to assessing the flood risk is based on the idea that the same attention that is given to the evaluation of the flood hazard is devoted to the assessment of vulnerability and social, economic and environmental system of the territory against the flood. Integrated flood risk management is based on the idea of optimal strategy, which is the result of a combination of a strategy aimed at reducing the extent of flooding, reduction of vulnerabilities and mitigating the negative consequences.
