While declared linguistic politics of the European Union is the expression of the support to multilingualism and language diversity, the actual linguistic situation in European countries shows a tendency towards a predominance of anglophone monolinguism, supported by globalizing and uniformizing trends in research and development policy and in management od education. This state of affairs is unfavourable to the "small languages" making part of European cultural heritage and motivates science to search for possibilities how to
support and maintain linguistic heterogeneity. Among these, there is intercomprehension - a communication strategy that enables the subject to communicate successfully in situation where there is a contact of languages.
The research project studies the level of intercomprehensive competences and related skils in populations speaking selected West Slavic and western South Slavic languages. It consists in measurement and analysis of written receptive interlingual communicative competence of subjects. Its aim is to bring new pieces of knowledge and to formulate findings which can be further developped and applied in scientific and educational practice.
